Capacity Compass

Turn Capacity Compass on for a board

Each board is either part of Capacity Compass or it is not. A project with several boards can have some planned and others left alone.

Before you begin: You need the Administer projects permission on the Jira project, or the global Administer Jira permission.

Enable a board

  1. Open the Jira project and select Board Planning in the sidebar.
  2. Select Board settings.
  3. If the project has several boards, pick the board.
  4. In the Availability section, select Enable.

The heading names the action available right now, so it reads Enable Capacity Planner on a disabled board and Disable Capacity Planner on an enabled one.

The Availability section in Board settings

If you do not have the permission, the button is not shown. It is hidden rather than greyed out, because a control that cannot work explains nothing.

Disable a board

  1. Follow the same path to Availability.
  2. Select Disable.

If the board has existing plans, Capacity Compass asks you to confirm and tells you how many.

Disabling keeps your data. The board stops appearing in Capacity Compass, but its plans and settings are kept. Enable it again and everything is where you left it.

What disabling changes

  • The board no longer appears in plan setup or the plan list.
  • Its detailed settings are not reachable until it is enabled again.
  • The board is still listed in Board settings, so you can switch it back on.
  • A note appears on the planning screen saying how many boards are disabled.

Nothing in Jira changes. Disabling is about Capacity Compass only.

Where the default comes from

A board nobody has switched by hand follows the site default, set by a Jira administrator. The default that ships is Scrum only, so Scrum boards are enabled and Kanban boards are not.

Once you enable or disable a board explicitly, it keeps your choice and stops following the site default. See Site settings for Jira admins.

The sidebar item stays either way

Board Planning appears in the sidebar of every Jira software project regardless of whether any board is enabled. Jira draws that item before the app runs, so Capacity Compass cannot hide it.

Opening it for a project with no enabled boards shows a message explaining that, with a link to settings.

Kanban boards

You can enable a Kanban board, but there is nothing to plan. Capacity planning works from sprints, and Kanban boards do not have them.
